TRAI looks to lower TV
bills
India’s Telecom and
Broadcasting regulatory authority is looking forward to reduce the prices for
monthly cable and DTH bills of consumers, a consultation paper has been issued
for this purpose already, and it was analyzed that new pricing regime by
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) which had aimed to make TV viewing
more affordable hasn’t worked as planned.
TRAI
want to make the pricing of TV channels transparent. The TRAI official said the
aim was to make TV channel pricing more transparent and to give control of
channels to the consumers, while making it more affordable but the results
are not the same as we expected.
Last December, TRAI said that a consumer must pay for those channels only that they want to see, rather than paying for those channels which they don’t watch. This rule came into effect from 1st February 2019. But it has some
different effects, while the move lowered tariffs for some of consumers like restaurant
and hotels that usually show only sports channel or news channel, but for
others monthly tariffs went up. TRAI unable to regulate the discount amount,
which is why many operators offering channels pack with prices starting from
INR 75.
The
impact of the regulations indicates a varied impact on monthly TV bills. Based
on current pricing, the monthly TV bill goes up by 25% from INR 230-240 to INR
300 per month for viewers who opt for the top 10 channels, but will come down for those who opt up to top 5 channels. Since the Supreme Court has already said that TRAI
has the power and jurisdiction over framing tariffs and regulations for the
broadcasting sector.
Now lets see will TRAI reduce the prices for Tv channels for the consumer, and what will be the measures of reducing the prices, a report by Mydthshop https://www.mydthshop.com/
